Verified Purchase. I found it hard to follow, maybe just me. What really bothered me was a newer edition came out a few weeks after I bought it, they did offer a discount for the new addition. There is a lot on the general navigation and generic customisation of Windows 10 which is useful if you're not familiar with the OS but has little to do with building a server.
I would have liked more information on turning the desktop OS into a server OS - which services can I turn off for example. Or what about Homegroup sharing versus the more advanced sharing options? We used this to set up our home server with Win It worked great. It was one of the most readable and complete description of how to set up your server that I have read.
I have purchased almost all of the texts, full and abbreviated from Terry and the guys over at wegotserved. Microsoft as usual has killed one of their best, consumer friendly products.
They are of course more of an enterprise company than a consumer company although most people do not realize this. This includes the death of TechNet which allows Microsoft enthusiast to use their advance products in a test environment while they would otherwise be too expensive to afford at home.
Let's not forget the death of Zune and Windows Media Center, that is another story. Building a Windows 10 Home Server helps to overcome that roadblock by taking the more affordable Home OS software and make it a functional server.
The text begins with physically building the machine all the way through using features that people don't even knows exists. Nod to Storage Spaces and File Versioning here. Apple at least gets that right, they let you know about the features.
Of course if you're buying this book, you're probably an enthusiast. The text is long, but easy to read. Given the liberal spacing, printing a hard copy from the PDF file could kill a few trees. In total the text covers a lot more than mentioned above. How to supplement the core OS for media acquisition, playback and storage. Accessing your "server" within and external to your network.
The list goes on for a while honestly. No one does what Terry and his crew do, especially for such a low price. Is the text exhaustive, not completely.
But for what you pay you get a lot. I have and will continue to buy nearly all of the texts they produce. I felt the value of the book was well worth the price I paid. It is well organized, well written and I can recommend it without reservation. I would give it 4. Like many of the other reviewers I have previously run WHS v.
I was disappointed when Microsoft announced they would not be continuing this product line. I read multiple online reviews and how-tos regarding Windows Server R2 Essentials, but was put off partly by the seeming complexity but mostly by the purchase price.
Also, I had learned, once I installed a "server" operating system, available utilities, such as anti-virus, anti-malware, and backup software, became more limited and more expensive.
My "server" needs were simple. I primarily needed a host for files, multimedia, and computer backups. I purchased Building a Windows 10 Home Server to see if this solution would meet my needs. Since I had already built and configured my server, the hardware related chapters were not relevant to my situation, but I thoroughly read or skimmed the remaining chapters and concluded a Window 10 Pro "server" should perfectly meet my needs.
The book was also a good introduction to Windows 10, which I had not yet installed on any of my computers. Following the book's directions, I installed and configured Windows 10 Pro over the recent holidays. The only problem I encountered had to do with sharing folders on the server with specific people rather than through the HomeGroup. I could see the folders on the "server" from the client computers but kept getting a "cannot access this folder" error message.
Once I did this for each specific user on each client computer, my file and folder sharing worked perfectly. If the book addressed this issue, I overlooked it. All my documents, music, photos, and digital videos are now hosted on the Windows 10 Server and all my computers are configured to run full and incremental backups to the server.
No messing around with WHS connector software on every client computer, no arbitrary limitations on the size of my server backups, no problems backing up the "server" OS. Everything just works. See all reviews.

Then back to the first statement Hyper-V server, VMware, Xen etc If you want to learn I don't see why W10 would be a problem for a testing setup.
Otherwise if Windows server is too expensive I know it is , look into Windows 10 pro for workstations. Why not just download the windows server eval or windows server preview version, and run it in Win 10 hyperv? I'm not sure what's really being asked here, but my two cents is "go for it". The only limitation you're likely to run into is if chosen software has platform requirements that force a "server" edition.
Otherwise the only other main limitation i can think of is the number of devices that can connect to the desktop edition as a "client". With the desktop editions, I think that's 5 or 10, depending on the version of Windows. This is off the top of my head, so ymmv. Good luck! This is all home lab messing around.
Mostly I'm getting annoyed with using the Windows Admin Center to manage everything the more I considered it, I was just going to nuke it and use Essentials Eval and then I thought maybe Windows 10 Pro would server my needs. I already have multiple keys for it, but if it's not going to work to meet my needs I was going to just install ESS as the Hyper-visor and call it a day.
I do like Linux for those who mentioned it, but I'm not familiar enough with it to use it as my Hyper-visor which would place me back in the same boat lol. I did look into the number of users that could connect to 10 pro and it looks like it's 20 concurrent users, but there is licensing in the EULA that limits connections more so than the OS being unable to handle it. Since there are few people if any connecting I think that would be fine.
With that setup is there anything I should be aware of if I outgrow 10 Pro? Would like to dodge any pitfalls, honestly reading the responses and working it out if that's the case I think 10 would most likely work the best since I'm not going to be running anything that'll force a Sever OS.
There is nothing "free" especially if you run evaluations longer than 90 days or days depending on the software. This means that if you install WHS on a system with a bit processor like the Pentium III or even certain early circa Pentium 4 or Celeron processors, your ability to upgrade the OS down the road may be limited.?
After specifying the boot device, you may still need to hit a key when prompted to do so in order to actually boot from the disc. When WHS is already on the system, you can also opt for a reinstall which will wipe away configuration settings but retain system backups and other stored data. If you received your software by mail, it should have come with a key; if you downloaded it, you can later register to obtain a product key which will give you the full day trial.
At this point you can walk away for a while because the installation will proceed unattended for some time—probably close to an hour—and reboot the system many times in the process. Once the WHS installation is complete and you see the Welcome screen, click the Continue button to complete the final configuration steps. For maximum security the password you choose should be a minimum of 7 characters—both uppercase and lowercase—and include at least one number or symbol.
